Experience gifts that do not go to waste

Experience gifts are given with good intentions and abandoned at an extraordinary rate. The reason is almost always the same: the giver had to make decisions that were not theirs to make.

The date is the problem

Most experience vouchers are booked for a specific day, or expire within a year, or both. Now the recipient has to rearrange their life around a guess you made in December. A meaningful share of these are never used, which means the gift became a donation to the company that sold it.

So is the location

Booking something in your city for someone who lives in another, or in their city for a place they have never mentioned wanting to go, adds travel to a present. Anything that lets them choose where removes the problem entirely.

Check three things before buying any experience gift

Does it expire? Can they change the date, and how many times? Can they use it somewhere other than where you bought it? If the answer to any of those is no, you are buying them an obligation.

Good for people who have everything

The reason experiences became the default gift for hard-to-buy-for people is sound — they do not add clutter, and they produce something to talk about. The execution is just usually poor.

Best received by people who would not book it themselves

The genuine value of an experience gift is permission. Plenty of people will not spend money on an afternoon out for themselves but are delighted when someone else does it for them.

Whatever you buy, the test is whether the recipient has to do anything difficult to use it. If they do, most of them will not.
